swam her age-group and high school years in Newcastle, Wyoming.
As an age group swimmer she won the state high-point award on
three occasions, setting several state records - one of which
still stands today. In high school, Marsha went undefeated at
the Wyoming 3A state championships, winning the 100 Breaststroke
four straight years, the 200 IM three straight years, and the
100 fly her senior year. She also set a state record in the 100
breaststroke that has stood for 12 years. Marsha was awarded the
Wyoming 3A High School Most Valuable Swimmer award her junior
and senior years, after finishing second in the voting to her
older sister during her freshman and sophomore years.
Marsha started her college swimming career at the University
of Iowa, where she met her future husband (and Hobson West swimming
alum), Doug Helm. After two uneventful years, Marsha transferred
to Colorado State University where she became an NCAA Division
I All-American through her swims on Colorado State's 200 Medley
and 400 Medley relays. On those relays, Marsha swam the breaststroke
leg to Amy Van Dyken, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, who swam
the butterfly leg. Marsha also placed second in the 100 breaststroke
at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships her junior
and senior years; she placed in the top six in the 200 breaststroke
and the top twelve in the 400 IM. Marsha also received Colorado
State University's Mencimer Award, awarded to a single female
student athlete for academic and athletic performance during her
senior year.
Marsha began coaching while still in high school as a junior
coach for the local USS program and facilitating private lessons.
In college she worked as an assistant coach for Colorado State
University's summer swim camps. There she worked with novice,
competitive, and elite swimmers on stroke technique, conditioning,
and mental preparation. Marsha also worked with swimmers at all
levels as the head coach for Heritage Village Swim Team, a summer
park district program in Littleton, Colorado.
For the past eight years, Marsha has been coaching with Maverick
Swim Club, a competitive USS club in Naperville. As a Maverick
coach, Marsha has worked with every age group and swimmers at
all skill levels from novice 8 & unders to college-aged competitive
swimmers. Marsha has also swum the breaststroke leg in the women's
